The Story of Go Boldly (Mary's Song)
In 1997, a friend of mine came to me with a movie script she had written and asked me to compose a theme song for the heroine, whose name was Mary. Setting about to meet the challenge, I started writing, however, something unusual began to take place. Each time I would pull a line out of ethers, I would begin to cry. I often say that writing music for me is like going into a timeless, spaceless place, hearing a song that is already written and translating it into form. As I write a song about a particular topic (or so I think), sometimes it reveals itself to be something else entirely. Go Boldly was one such song. No matter what I thought I wanted to write, something different came out. At first, I didn't understand, until I got to the second verse, which clearly spelled out that this was a song about Mother Mary, climbing the hill to see her son on the cross. After that, I could barely finish writing the song amidst my sobbing: Go boldly, Mary, feel your way On the morning of December 2, 2008 before I jumped the plane to Oslo, Norway to do my work, with my friends Brenda at my side and Cathy on the phone, I deposited a copy of this song in the Fed Ex drop box, on its way to the man who screens compositions for consideration by Celine Dion. "Team Celine" as we call ourselves, all three of us put out our intention that this submission will rise to the top of the pile in the sea of music sent to Celine. We held the package up to the brilliant Texas sun and intended it will literally glow with the potential for her to hear it and fall in love. If we can face our most difficult moments in faith, we have triumphed over everything, including death. Re-recording this song in my little studio in downtown Corpus Christi, once again I was inspired back into faith. Faith that I even have a song that Celine Dion might consider. Faith that just being alive is a miracle. Faith that no matter how things look, that all the promises my angels have made to me will indeed be kept, as they kept Mary's through the millenniums. As I was finishing up the recording, I was able to capture the church bells that innudate my apartment on Sunday mornings. Every half hour in the city known as "The Body of Christ" church bells peal their celebration of the triumph of love over death in the most passionate drama ever told, that of Mary and her son. If Celine Dion records and releases Go Boldly, millions of hearts will be moved to heal, as mine has been, and Cathy's and Brenda's and countless others of us looking to become the change, to become the compassion. As a way to say thank you to the universe for gifting me with this precious talent, I make this recording available for you, to inspire you to keep going when you think you can't. All I ask is that as you listen, you put your intention into Celine receiving this song and being moved to send it out to the world in a way I alone could never do. And as you listen, remember the angels, and don't forget to breathe....
